Michael A. Finney has held roles in government, industry, and higher education, continually working to support entrepreneurship and innovation, job creation, and economic growth. Over five years, he helped spark the growth of innovation-focused companies and jobs in Ann Arbor, Michigan, serving as president and CEO of Ann Arbor SPARK. He held the same role for four years at the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), where his responsibilities included serving as president and chairman of the Michigan Strategic Fund and as Governor Rick Snyder’s Economic Growth Group Executive. Under his leadership, the MEDC became a national model for economic development, with the state adding more than 300,000 new jobs and billions of dollars in new investments. Following his work with the MEDC and as an advisor to Governor Snyder, Mr. Finney founded and led Community Ventures Resources, a social impact consulting team focused on assisting underprivileged communities.
In his current role as president and CEO of the Miami-Dade Beacon Council, he helps grow local companies and promotes the county as a business destination. He has received numerous awards for his work, including the 2014 Michigan Venture Capital Association Lifetime Achievement Award, the 2012 Michigan Chronicle Legacy in Motion Newsmakers award, and recognition in 2008 as Saginaw Valley State University Outstanding Alumnus for the College of Business and Management. He holds an M.A. in Human Resources from Central Michigan University and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Saginaw Valley State University.
