The institute engages with University of Michigan and external students to provide multidisciplinary economic research opportunities and applied business and community assessment. The institute staff and program directors coach and mentor students as they conduct real world research and tackle hands-on client assessments and engagements. The institute is proud to offer economic research and applied business and community assessment opportunities to students with varying backgrounds. University of Michigan institute staff and faculty have worked with over hundred’s of U-M students, both undergraduate and graduate, many of the former coming from the University’s Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP). Students with backgrounds in business, economics, engineering, information, finance, natural resources & environment, public health, social work, architecture & urban planning, political science, statistics, data science, mathematics, international studies, biology, physics, chemistry, and computer science have all contributed to the institute’s success.

Student work may include the following scope:

  • Prescreen and process potential program client company applications,

  • Develop Market Specific Overviews (MSO) and supply market intelligence to clients,

  • Perform assessments of companies,

  • Identify and document critical gaps,

  • Perform searches and arrange for resources (both university and/or private sector) to address critical gaps identified during assessment,

  • Develop scopes of work (SOW) and facilitate selection and contracting of identified private sector or university resources to perform project activity,

  • Summarize the assessment, search findings, SOW and MSO, and develop a customized action plan with targeted recommendations towards successful innovation and commercialization of new products.

The institute sees increasing competition among student applicants for program analyst and research positions. Current and former students form a significant portion of the staff as well because there are opportunities to grow at the institute. The institute students grow and prosper as alumni, becoming part of a powerful network during and after their time at the institute. Former alumni feel prepared after working at the institute for roles in the public and private sector, at startups and Fortune 500 companies, and located domestically and abroad.
