Industry 4.0 Grants

The Economic Growth Institute is proud to be a key partner on three regional grants from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation to drive regional readiness for Industry 4.0. Manufacturers have been facing pressure to continually adapt to the progressing digital revolution and innovate to stay competitive. Michigan is making a conscious effort to ensure our manufacturers remain resilient.

The first two grants EGI is partnering on were awarded to the Manufacturing Growth Alliance and will support Industry 4.0 education, analysis of a company's preparedness, and matching grant funds to assist small to medium sized manufacturers in the upper peninsula, northeast lower Michigan, and southwest Michigan.  The third grant EGI will be partnering on is the Technology Readiness Demo Fund awarded to Lean Rocket Lab in south central Michigan in a collaboration with Automation Alley and Centrepolis Accelerator. This demo fund will help catalyze technology demonstrations within Michigan's manufacturing community by sharing in the cost associated with testing early stage industry 4.0 technologies.

Economic Growth Institute joins effort to ease disruption from nuclear facility closure

Map of southwest MichiganLike many regions across the country, southwestern Michigan is preparing for the closure of a nuclear power facility, the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant.

The impact of this transition on a community can lead to reduced tax base, lost employment, reduction in services and an unused site. The Economic Growth Institute at the University of Michigan and local partners are responding to craft a new vision, strategy and plan that will lower the risk for and severity of such outcomes while driving renewal and growth after the facility’s planned closing next year.  Read more

Advanced Manufacturing Cybersecurity Program (AMCP)

Do you need a workforce that understands both cybersecurity and manufacturing?  If so, join us on August 5th, at noon for a lunch and learn information session.  Register Here

The program combines online instruction and hands-on learning labs to build cybersecurity knowledge within a manufacturing setting. As a manufacturing partner, you can develop cyber talent by hosting a cybersecurity intern or upskilling a current employee. Not only will you play a key role in providing this critical workforce practical hands-on experience critical to their success, but you will also receive additional support for your cybersecurity team!

Concerned about funding to upskill an employee or paying an intern or apprentice? We have several financial resources available to assist with these costs.

Tune into our Lunch & Learn zoom info session on August 5, 12:00pm EST! It's an opportunity for us to answer any of your AMCP questions.

Student Research Associate Rebecca Turley

Rebecca Turley is a second-year Master of Science student at the School for Environment & Sustainability.  As a research associate at EGI, Rebecca is working on several programs.

"Working for the EGI has allowed me to apply many of the concepts I've been focusing on in my master's program: the economics and politics of transitioning to renewable energy, and how this affects workers and communities. It's been exciting to partner with the Michigan state government on this, and encouraging to see a focus on solutions that benefit both the planet and the people that work hard to supply our energy every day."

"This summer, I'm also diving into federal-level policy as an intern for Michigan Congressman Andy Levin's office. The perspectives I'm gaining this summer on how policy is both made and implemented will be invaluable to my career. After graduation, I hope to get to work on renewable energy policy and continue to be an advocate for just transitions across the country."
