MiTalks is a series of educational webinars focused on the transition of the electric vehicle industry and the resources available to communities. MiTalk webinars aim to highlight valuable resources within the Michigan ecosystem through progressive dialogue and guest speakers.
During a previous MiTalk titled Powering Progress: Michigan’s Role in Emerging Mobility Technologies, Bernard Swiecki discussed how Michigan communities can transition their automotive legacies and capture the opportunities of emerging mobility technologies. For more about upcoming MiTalks, subscribe to EGI’s Community email list.
MiVTTP helps Michigan communities understand and respond to the impacts of the automotive industry’s transition to electric vehicles by developing community-based action plans, workforce development solutions, and technical assistance. By sharing replicable best practices and case studies statewide, the initiative supports community-led responses that create quality jobs, expand inclusive mobility options, and strengthen local economies.

Kim Reid is a legend at EGI, with campus memories stretching back to the days of Bo Schembechler. Since the mid-1980s, Kim has been a friendly and indispensable presence, starting her journey in the "Special Projects Division" before EGI became what it is today. From her start as a student assistant, she’s embraced many roles, and now serves as the institute’s Senior Administrative Assistant.
Known for her reliability and encyclopedic knowledge, Kim supports every EGI program and is the go-to for staff and students alike. Whether answering “Kim, how do I…?” questions in hallways or providing calm solutions in a crowded chatroom, she keeps the organization running smoothly. For Kim, the best part of working at EGI remains the people.
Kim’s skills extend far and wide. She brings creativity to design projects and never hesitates to jump in on technical challenges, often solving IT issues before others even know there’s a problem. Her commitment has been formally recognized with the Staff Recognition Award, and colleagues praise her as “a heat-seeking submarine missile when getting a job done.”
Outside of work, Kim enjoys spending time with her grandkids and testing out fun gadgets. EGI is grateful to have Kim’s energy, resourcefulness, and sense of humor anchoring the team, and her enduring dedication continues to make a positive impact on everyone who works with her.

Madison Boyd grew up in Pontiac, Michigan, where she developed an interest in leadership and community engagement. Guided by her interests in social impact, Madison chose to study Public Policy at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, with a special focus on Sports Policy.
During the past year, Madison has played an active role within the Economic Growth Institute, contributing to the Michigan Vehicle Technology Transition Impact Project (MiVTTP). Among her favorite experiences at EGI was crafting and distributing the MiVTTP newsletters, a project that allowed her to communicate essential resources and programming to a broad and diverse audience. These outreach efforts, combined with memorable moments working and interacting with EGI staff, brought together a supportive and enthusiastic network of colleagues.
Reflecting on her time at EGI, Madison credits the institute with providing hands-on professional development and meaningful exposure to community impact initiatives. EGI’s collaborative environment has enriched her academic journey and further inspired her pursuit of advocacy and community engagement.
Looking to the future, Madison’s next steps will be in consulting, where she plans to help businesses strategize around marketing and public relations. She hopes to build on these experiences before continuing her education in law school.
Outside of work and academics, Madison enjoys unwinding with walks, traveling to new places, and exploring new music. She is grateful for the mentorship and sense of belonging she has found at EGI, and is excited to continue making a difference in her future work.
