Senior Research Project Manager

Mengjie Lyu is a research project senior manager contributing to EGI’s empirical and applied research projects.

Using both quantitative and qualitative research approaches, Mengjie leads and supports multiple studies, collaborating closely with EGI partners and U-M faculty on a diverse range of topics.

Prior to joining EGI in 2024, Mengjie was a Visiting Assistant Professor at the School of Labor and Employment Relations at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Her recent research has investigated the impacts of occupational licensing and delicensing reforms on job quality; the sorting and mobility of platform workers in the gig economy; changes of alternative work arrangements; and the influences of AI and automation in the workplace. Mengjie also developed and offered graduate-level courses in compensation systems and employee benefits. Outside of work, Mengjie enjoys spending time with her family and reading detective novels.

Mengjie has a B.B.A. (2010) in Labor and Social Security from Southwest University of China, a M.A. (2012) and a Ph.D. (2015) and in Labor Economics from Renmin University of China. With an interdisciplinary background in economics, management, and sociology, she brings a unique perspective to her research.
