Current Projects
MiVTTP: Michigan Vehicle Technology Transition Impact Project
The Michigan Vehicle Technology Transition Impact Project (MiVTTP) aims to support underserved communities by facilitating strategic planning sessions based on insights from recently hosted listening sessions. These strategic planning sessions will involve critical stakeholders to develop consensus-driven, community-based action plans. The resulting plans will include timelines, key resources, and expert input, accelerating technical assistance and workforce training to address potential challenges and opportunities of the transition to electric vehicles. Project partners will collaborate to tailor solutions to each community’s specific needs, launching effective, community-driven initiatives. Learn more.
Downriver Community Conference/ Downriver Riverfront Communities Economic Recovery Implementation Project
EGI led a thorough review and revision of the 2021 strategy through strategic meetings aimed at pinpointing key priorities and economic development projects. Six critical projects were identified, and four sub-teams were formed to provide specialized attention and expertise. Bi-annual strategy team meetings and quarterly sub-team meetings have since been ongoing, encouraging productive discussions and ensuring alignment of goals across riverfront communities.
ETIP: Energy Transition Impact Project
The Michigan Department of Treasury’s Energy Transition Impact Project (ETIP) provides technical assistance and critical research to boost economic recovery and community revitalization in Michigan, particularly in areas affected by changes in the energy sector. Two key initiatives are in progress: the Palisades Economic Recovery Initiative (PERI) in southwest Michigan and the Downriver Riverfront Communities Economic Recovery Initiative in southeast Michigan. The focus is on capacity-building activities, strengthening relationships among ecosystem partners, leveraging resources, and implementing solutions to address immediate economic recovery, stabilization, and growth needs. Additionally, the project includes the development of an Economic Recovery Playbook, which aims to provide valuable strategies for mitigating the impacts of energy sector transitions, to be distributed to Michigan stakeholders in 2024.
EVTIP: Electric Vehicle Transformation Impact Program
In spring 2023, Michigan state agencies collaborated with the Economic Growth Institute at the University of Michigan to develop a strategic framework supporting communities affected by economic transitions, particularly in EV manufacturing. Using the Allovance Method, stakeholders identified priorities and objectives to guide decision-making and address local needs. The resulting plan includes action-based initiatives aimed at fostering resilience and sustainable development in impacted areas. This collaborative effort reflects Michigan’s commitment to proactively manage economic transitions while prioritizing community engagement and support.
Palisades Economic Recovery Initiative
The EGI team has gained a comprehensive understanding of the region’s strengths and challenges. These insights inform the creation of a recovery roadmap reflecting community needs. A strategic planning phase, initiated in late 2023 with the PERI Strategic Planning engagement, involves meetings, stakeholder engagement, and analysis to identify growth opportunities and allocate resources effectively. The collaborative drafting of a Recovery Strategy with local and state partners prioritizes regional goals. The efforts have already resulted in enhanced organizational convening, collaborative decision-making, and stronger regional ties, leading to tangible impacts across the three-county region. The aim is to launch a comprehensive, community-led recovery strategy in 2024 to drive regional projects and initiatives forward.
Previous Engagements
EGI supported local partners as part of the Southwest Virginia Energy Storage and Electrification Jobs Project. Through data collection, analysis, and community engagement, the team helped develop a local strategy to address high priority needs, particularly workforce development. Local leaders are using these insights to plan a regional response to economic development that supports local communities and businesses across two counties.
